JAGD & HUND presented itself impressively as Europe’s flagship exhibition

  • New record with about 82,000 visitors
  • WILD FOOD FESTIVAL premiere a complete success
  • Large participation by international associations

Dortmund (ESa) – Europe’s largest hunting exhibition presented itself this year with more than 800 international exhibitors from 40 countries. Jointly with the FISCH & ANGEL exhibition, JAGD & HUND occupied the entire exhibition site to present spectacular demonstrations, diverse participation events, a huge diversity of products and services for hunting and angling and culinary art from 29 January to 3 February. The new WILD FOOD FESTIVAL in the Westfalenhalle event arena attracted not only hunting and angling fans and nature friends but also gourmets to Dortmund. About 82,000 visitors wanted to see the spectacle. “The appeal was enormous. JAGD & HUND has proven its leading position in the sector once again in 2019 and has more than confirmed its position as an international flagship exhibition,” said Sabine Loos, CEO of Westfalenhallen Dortmund GmbH.

The survey by an independent exhibition market research institute revealed: The visitors at JAGD & HUND 2019 again included many guests from the neighbouring Benelux countries, and guests from many other countries including Great Britain, France, Croatia, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, China, South Africa and Australia did also not want to miss Europe’s largest hunting exhibition. About 12,4 per cent of the visitors at the hunting exhibition came from abroad.

Visitors came from almost all the federal states of Germany. The largest groups came from North Rhine Westphalia, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Wurttemberg and Bavaria.

Visitors satisfied with product diversity, exhibitors and exhibition

The most popular products at JAGD & HUND 2019 were hunting clothing, weapons and accessories, hunting accessories and optics. Other popular topics were animal food and dog products, cross-country vehicles and culinary delights. About 90 per cent of the visitors were satisfied with the product diversity of the exhibitors. The offer range of the exhibition was given the rating ‘good’ or ‘very good’ by the visitors. The most popular topic presentations and special shows were the birds of prey demonstrations and the presentations of the hunting dog breeds. However, the cross-country vehicle course in Hall 3B was also at

the top of the list again this year.

About 9 out of ten visitors are completely satisfied with JAGD &

HUND 2019. They have therefore already decided to visit the

exhibitions again next year.

About 90 per cent of the exhibitors also liked being at JAGD &

HUND 2019 and the satisfaction with the achieved sales has also

increased.

More than a third of the visitors at JAGD & HUND also intended

to visit the co-located FISCH & ANGEL exhibition or had already

been there. They gave the angling exhibition a ‘good’ rating. 93

per cent of the exhibitors have already firmly scheduled Europe’s

largest hunting exhibition in their diary for 2020.

Great premiere: WILD FOOD FESTIVAL was a complete success

The new WILD FOOD FESTIVAL in the Westfalenhalle event arena

also got good ratings. “Tasty wild game meat is today a firm

element of a modern, regional and high-quality cuisine,” said

Ralph Müller-Schallenberg, President of the State Hunting

Association of North Rhine Westphalia, to confirm the importance

of the event, and added: “Through the WILD FOOD FESTIVAL, we

now reach a broader audience beyond the hunter households.”

Torsten Reinwald, Deputy Managing Director of the German

Hunting Association, also praised the new and increased offer at

the exhibition: “The WILD FOOD FESTIVAL offers a fantastic

advertising platform for the domestic market and is unique in that

form across Germany.” A total of 26 star-rated and TV celebrity

chefs and cooking experts from the scene spoilt the visitors on

the stage and in their workshops with a top-class culinary

programme during the entire exhibition period. The 22 offered

workshops of the expert chefs always had a large number of

participants. Besides chefs like Johann Lafer, Thomas Jaumann

and Daniel Dal-Ben, the humorous food expert and TV celebrity

chef, Sebastian Lege, also showed the visitors diverse cooking

methods for wild game meat: “Despite all traditions, wild game

meat today has a new, young face that ensures that it is also of

culinary interest to young people,” said Sebastian Lege.

Extended association offer from around the world

JAGD & HUND presented itself as a forum for international

exchange of information once again in 2019. More than 40

regional, national and international meetings that were initiated by

the State Hunting Association of North Rhine Westphalia took

place within the scope of the JAGD & HUND exhibition. The

international importance of JAGD & HUND was also further

increased this year by the participation of FACE, the European

Federation of Associations for Hunting & Conservation). The

increasing internationalisation of the exhibition is also evidenced

by the joint stand of major international hunting associations.

Besides FACE, the ‘Hubertus Vereniging Vlaanderen’ hunting

association from Belgium, the ‘Koninklijke Nederlandse Jagers

Vereniging’ hunting association from The Netherlands, the

NAPHA professional hunting association from Namibia and the

British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) from

Great Britain were there for talks on the joint stand. FACE also

organised meetings and workgroups within the scope of JAGD &

HUND.

Representatives of the International Council for Game and Wildlife

Conservation (CIC) met at the exhibition again in 2019. The CIC is

an advisory body and, according to its own statement, acts as a

politically independent, transcontinental and global representative

of hunters. In 2019, the CIC Meeting within the scope of JAGD &

HUND was attended not only by the German delegation but also

by many members of CIC International.

High-ranking visitors also came from North Rhine Westphalia Ulla

Heinen-Esser, Minister for the Environment, Agriculture, Nature

Conservation and Consumer Protection of the State of North

Rhine Westphalia gave a ceremonial speech at the opening

ceremony. She appeared to be very satisfied with the new Draft

Hunting Act. The Act should enter into force just in time for the

new hunting year.

Winner Deer Caller Championship and RedFox Award

Thomas Soltwedel from Dobbin-Linstow in Mecklenburg-Western

Pomerania is the new German Deer Caller Champion and that

after only his second participation in the competition. At the

German Deer Calling Championship, WILD UND HUND, which

claims to be Europe’s leading German-language hunting

magazine, in co-operation with the exhibition organiser, Messe

Dortmund, presented the 17 best deer callers in Germany.

Christian Hieke from Düren in North Rhine Westphalia was able to

win second place. The third place was won by Immo Ortlepp from

Wedemark in Lower Saxony, a competition ‘old- timer’ who was

the German Champion in 2014 and repeatedly took a top place in

other years. The three winners have directly qualified themselves

for a participation in the European Championship. Hildegard

Zervos from Oberzier in North Rhine Westphalia, the only female

in the competition, won 6th place this year and therefore did

much better than in the previous year.

The International German RedFox Award took place at JAGD &

HUND for the seventh time in a row. The competition is organised

by the ‘WILD UND HUND’ magazine jointly with the German furrier

trade and the Professor Elsässer Foundation in Munich and

Messe Dortmund. A competition and a show which are intended

to make people think about the use of fur from nature and our

region. All the furs used by the furriers originate from sustainable

ethical hunting. Almost thirty models were presented this year. The

jury was most convinced by: Wolff 1782 GmbH from Hagen in the

category "Accessories" with a reversible, muskrat-lined little vest,

Egon Samabor from Regensburg in the category "functional

clothing" with a rhomboid quilted muskrat men's functional jacket

with knit, Guido Adrian from Cologne in the category "outer

garments" with a red fox jacket with detachable hood, and in the

category "Young Star" Torben Dömer, in his third year of

apprenticeship at Guido Adrian from Cologne, with a Bouclé

costume with shorn red fox trim.

Apprenticeship offer very popular

The ‘Apprenticeship Open Day for Hunting Ground Supervisors’

hosted by the Federal Association of German Professional

Hunters (Bundesverband Deutscher Berufsjäger - BDB) went into

the second round in 2019 after its successful premiere last year.

On Saturday, the BDB invited everyone interested in such

apprenticeship, future apprentices, parents and friends to an

information event at the Convention Centre.

The ‘Learning Place Nature’ (Lernort Nature) initiative started in

three of the nine exhibition halls this year. Learning by playing and

having fun was the prime objective for child visitors at the lovinglydesigned

adventure path. Ms. Sigrid Russ, head of the ‘Learning

Place Nature’ initiative by the State Hunting Association of North

Rhine Westphalia, appeared to be both exhausted and delighted

after six exhibition days: “Not only numerous primary school

classes but also special needs schools came to us because our

‘Learning Place Nature’ stands are barrier-free. What we do here is

voluntary work - the happy eyes of the children are enough reward

for us.”

Nature conservation was also taken into account. Visitors at this

year’s JAGD & HUND could prove their shooting accuracy at an

air rifle shooting stand. The RUAG Ammotec company donated

the proceeds to the Wildlife and Biotope Protection Non-Profit

Organisation of North Rhine Westphalia (Wildtier- und

Biotopschutz-Stiftung NRW). Georg Kurella, Vice President of the

State Hunting Association of North Rhine Westphalia could accept

about 5,000 euros from Rolf Knäpper (RUAG Ammotec) on the

last exhibition day. Georg Kurella said: “The Wildlife and Biotope

Protection Non-Profit Organisation of North Rhine Westphalia

sponsors nature conservation and environmental education

projects by hunters throughout North Rhine Westphalia. We will be

able to invest this money really well in such projects.”

Digital platform: Bloggers and Influencers were guests

The digital development was addressed this year with two

professional Social Media Lounges. The new Hunting Lounge in

Hall 8 and the Food Lounge in the Westfalenhalle event arena

were a meeting place for the Blogger and Influencer scene during

the entire exhibition period. Numerous nature friends took souvenir

photos of themselves in fantastic hunting landscape with the aid of

a photo booth. Very popular were the numerous lectures on

exhibition Saturday.

FISCH & ANGEL with an extended offer

The FISCH & ANGEL exhibition presented

itself for the sixth time as an independent

angling exhibition co-located with JAGD &

HUND. The FISCH & ANGEL visitors could

not only enjoy the classic angling delicacies

at the exhibition but also had the opportunity of visiting, free-ofcharge,

the WILD FOOD FESTIVAL, which took place in the

adjoining Westfalenhalle event area at the same time. That was

well received. The Fishing Association of North Rhine Westphalia

(Fischereiverband NRW) welcomed this new highlight: “We

regard the new WILD FOOD FESTIVAL as being a very good

innovation because it offers hunters and anglers a platform where

they can offer fresh food from nature,” said the Association’s

President, Johannes Nüsse.

After being inspired by tips and tricks in lectures and

demonstrations by experts like Enrico Di Ventura, Benedikt

Götzfried, Michael Kahlstadt, Veit Wilde or Rico Streul, the

exhibition visitors could buy suitable products at numerous

exhibition stands and equip themselves for the next angling trip.

Visitor interest was especially high in the angling accessories,

angling equipment and angling clothing market segments. The

most popular shows and demonstrations included the Baiting Art

special show, the info offers for rod construction and fly tying, the

Fishing and Sea Angling Forums with experts and professional

anglers and the Still Water Biotope. The mobile underwater

laboratory (Otti’s Submarine) presented by the Youth Section of

the Fishing Association of North Rhine Westphalia (Fischerjugend

NRW) was very appealing to children.

The exhibitions will take place in 2020 from 28 January to 2

February.

JAGD & HUND and FISCH & ANGEL 2019 –

Partner and Exhibitor Testimonials

Ralph Müller-Schallenberg, President of the State Hunting

Association of North Rhine Westphalia:

“JAGD & HUND has been Europe’s largest hunting exhibition

for many years. The new WILD FOOD FESTIVAL also makes it a

gourmet exhibition. We have really hit the mark again with the

WILD FOOD FESTIVAL. Delicious wild game meat is absolutely

trendy. Interest and demand were overwhelming both on the

cooking demonstration stage and in the sale of ready-to-cook

wild game meat cuts. The interest of the general public is

understandable because hunting itself is part of our society. The

overwhelming response to our environmental education offer

with the ‘Learning Place Nature’ event in three of the nine

exhibition halls also proves that.”

Dr. Franz Petermann from the Hunting Dog Association:

“The development of the exhibition has not yet come to an end.

The participation has increased again. Our new President Karl

Walch also made his inaugural visit to the exhibition. Especially

the hunting dog demonstrations were again very well received.”

Torsten Reinwald, Deputy Managing Director, German Hunting

Association:

“We started with our ‘WILD about WILD GAME MEAT’ campaign

two years ago in order to raise the general public’s awareness

of the wild game meat topic and to show the versatility of the

meat because it can be served with side dishes other than red

cabbage and dumplings. After having increasingly and

successfully addressed hunters at JAGD & HUND in previous

years, we wanted to also address the consumers this year. And

for that, the WILD FOOD FESTIVAL offers a fantastic advertising

platform for the domestic market and is unique in that form

across Germany. The wild game meat topic is well received by

the visitors and media. People’s eyes sparkle with joy when they

come to our stand. The feedback is positive without exception

and the interest in our offered stage programme and workshops

is also immense. Our fund-raising campaign for the Dortmund

Food Bank was also well received. We already had donations

amounting to more than 3,000 euros in only the first three days

of the exhibition.”

Stefan Meier, Marketing and Sales Manager, Grube KG:

“JAGD & HUND again boasts a high- quality level as it did in

previous years. It is the largest exhibition in the hunting sector

and is therefore very important to our company. It is especially

the scope and the number of visitors that are impressive. Our

new products, such as the battery-powered capstan winch or

our tested hunting equipment, are very well received by the

visitors.”

Sabine Herr, Stand Manager, bilderherr:

“We are very satisfied with the exhibition. What we like is that we

have more quality at one location. There is also a good diversity.

We were also pleased to notice that the mix in the area of our

stand is well-balanced. Our paintings are well received by the

customers. Furthermore, the reliable, friendly employees of the

organiser have been the same for many years. We enjoy

coming to JAGD & HUND every year.”

Susanne Newzella, Proprietor, twins No.2:

“We enjoy the exhibition very much. We are pleased about the

many visitors and the good mood. We are very impressed by

the fashion show. It is a superb advertising opportunity for us

and attracts many visitors to our stand. The timing of the

exhibition is ideal for our exclusive furs and winter wear. Our

outdoor scarfs are especially popular among the visitors this

year. We will gladly come again next year.”

Hesham Khalifa, Live Communications Manager, Blaser Group:

“We have been very satisfied with the exhibition so far. We are

pleased about the high demand of customers. JAGD & HUND

is the most important end user exhibition to us. The importance

of the exhibition is also reflected by the size of our stand. As in

previous years, we can again look back on high-quality talks

with customers. And we are very pleased that the new products

were also well received by the visitors.”

Sebastian Lüken, Head of Category Management, Carl Zeiss

AG:

“This exhibition is one of the most important ones to us because

we get in touch with the end users and provide them with

relevant, necessary and correct information. We got excellent

feedback from our customers.”

Christopher Blatt, Managing Director, Jagdschule Blatt GmbH:

“We can be very satisfied with the exhibition. JAGD & HUND is

the leading exhibition of the hunting sector. It is therefore very

important to us. We will definitely be here again next year.”

Carsten Muth, Exhibition, Event & Seminar Operations

Executive, Paul Parey:

“Generally speaking, our sales have gradually increased year

after year. Our calendars ranging from diaries to wall calendars

were our best-selling products last year and this trend is still

unbroken this year.”

Stefanie Wassmann, holz+raum East Germany:

“Our sales figures are as high as in the previous year. The visitor

quality is good and we have business talks with both regular

customers and new customers. As our headquarters are in West

Germany’s Sauerland region, the JAGD & HUND exhibition in

Dortmund is definitely the most important exhibition to us.”

André Wilkens, Managing Director, Wildhüters GmbH:

“The new WILD FOOD FESTIVAL got an incredibly good

response from the visitors and my products are also greatly

liked by them. Many questions are asked, the interest in the

topic is great and the Festival is really an enrichment. We feel

very comfortable here and want to come again next year.”

Erik Ohm, Event Organisation Management Assistant, Mammut

Catering:

“The WILD FOOD FESTIVAL is a good idea and we are very

satisfied with its implementation in the traditional Westfalenhalle

event arena. Our food sells well and the visitors’ interest is

definitely great.”

Conrad Baierl, Master Butcher, Der Wilde Metzger:

“I love the WILD FOOD FESTIVAL! All our team has fun here and

we definitely want to come again. With sound expert knowledge

and traditional craftsmanship, I am definitely at the right place

here. My stand is well visited because of my recognition value

and because I also offer workshops here. All our products are

well-known and sell well. The Festival was overall very popular

among the visitors.”

Sven Heeger, Sales Manager, MONOLITH:

“It’s a new experience for the hunters and anglers but the WILD

FOOD FESTIVAL is very well received. Everything has been just

fine so far, from the number of customer contacts to the sales

revenues. Our grill is a fast seller in all variations but we have

also sold many accessories. We have many new customers on

the stand and there is a great interest in our products.”

Johannes Nüsse, President of the Fishing Association of North

Rhine Westphalia:

“The FISCH & ANGEL and JAGD & HUND exhibitions are an

excellent opportunity for the Fishing Association of North Rhine

Westphalia to do PR for the angling cause and get in touch with

hunting and other user associations. Our stand was again

visited by many club members and even club chairmen

because they wanted to obtain information on the latest fishing

developments and possibilities. Visitors found the information

on ‘The Lippe River – River Landscape 2018/2019’ very

interesting. We are also very pleased about the presence of fish

farmers and pond owners and welcome the offer of fresh fish

served at the exhibition. We regard the new WILD FOOD

FESTIVAL as being a very good innovation because it offers

hunters and anglers a platform where they can offer fresh food

from nature. We enjoy being the supporting organisation of the

well-known FISCH & ANGEL exhibition and look forward to a

joint future.”

Uwe Pinnau, Senior Chairman of the German Pike Angling Club:

“FISCH & ANGEL is an absolute highlight for us every year. We

could successfully introduce ourselves to many interested

anglers and have good talks. We will be pleased to come again

next year.”

Thorsten Arens from the Media & Fishing Team:

“FISCH & ANGEL presented a great variety of worldwide

techniques for freshwater and saltwater angling at the Fishing

Forum, the Sea Angling Forum and the Still Water Biotope. No

other exhibition is so well positioned in this area as FISCH &

ANGEL. The high quality of the speakers and the two forums

speak for themselves. The newly integrated Professional Mile

offers visitors an additional experience.”

Harry Janssen, Managing Director, RHEINLANDBOOTE (NL):

“Dortmund is a central location in the Ruhr Region and within

easy reach and that makes FISCH & ANGEL an optimum sales

platform. The visitors are very interested; there are many

returning customers per day and plenty of regular customers

who visit us on our stand.”

Claudia Otero Davila, Stand Manager, Jörg Strehlow:

“FISCH & ANGEL is an important exhibition for the Ruhr Region

and Dortmund is the ideal exhibition location. It is really

important to us that we can be an exhibitor here and

demonstrate presence with our concept of sustainability and

environmental protection in angling. The first exhibition day has

already exceeded our expectations. The Food Festival in the

Westfalenhalle event arena superbly suits the exhibition concept

because the German Animal Protection Act also demands that

the angler’s or hunter’s prey should be eaten afterwards. The

WILD FOOD FESTIVAL is definitely an upgrade of both

exhibitions.”
